Short club history:
Model flying in the Derry area can be traced back to 1939 when Dr. Austin Kinsella joined forces with Claude Austin of the famous Austin’s department store to fly free flight models and so founded the NWMAC. The early 1950’s saw the NWMAC take up residence at the decommissioned Fleet Air Arm airfield at Maydown, however by the 1960’s the MoD sold Maydown to Du Pont Chemicals. A new flying site was then found at Eglinton, which proved to be ideal home for the NWMAC for some 25 years. By the early 1980’s Derry City Council had decided to develop Eglinton as a commercial airport. As the airport developed, restrictions upon the activities of the club increased to the point that by 1989 the Club decided to vacate Eglinton and seek an alternative site. Land at Gransha hospital was our first alternative home, one that was occupied for approximately a year until the authorities decided to build a new hospital on site! Subsequently the Club moved to the council playing fields at Prehen. This was not an ideal location as it was constrained by a major road on one side and the River Foyle on the other. Negotiations with Derry City Council for an alternative and permanent site now commenced and in 1994 NWMAC took possession of The Council’s landfill site at Duncastle Road, Newbuildings with a 25-year lease. The 5.5 acres site was top soiled, fenced off, and a 60m x 20m tarmac runway, access road, and car park were built at a cost in excess of £15k. Newbuildings remains our home and is a source of great pride for the 50 strong modellers of the NWMAC.
Flying disciplines; planes, gliders, helis, jets
Our club's airfield occupies a 5.5-acre site and proudly boasts one of the few model tarmac runways in Ireland measuring some 60 meters. We are also proud to boast two fully qualified instructors helping all flyers get their wings, and a British Model Flying Association (BMFA) appointed Area Chief Examiner helping us with the BMFA achievement scheme. Our main meeting time is on Sunday mornings, (fixed wing & helicopters mixed), when you will find us on site from 11.30am - 2.00pm (weather dependant). As we a have a lease and planning permission for our airfield we are extremely lucky that our members can fly at any time with no restriction.
